Cracked windshields seem to be a Dallas tradition! You see them everywhere. Usually, those huge cracks started out as a small rock chip that could have easily been repaired. But once a windshield is cracked all the way across (“cracked out”), it has to be replaced.
Temperature changes, wind pressure, and road vibrations can all cause a rock chip or small crack to spread, sometimes rapidly.
To restore the structural integrity of the windshield, which is part of your vehicle’s safety system in case of rollover, both the original rock chip and the crack must be repaired.
Types of Windshield Cracks
It is important to identify the type of crack to determine if your windshield is repairable. The American National Standard Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard (ROLAGS) identifies the following types of cracks:
- Short: 6 inches (150mm) or less.
- Long: More than 6 inches (150mm).
- Edge: Extends to an edge.
- Floater: Does not extend to an edge.
- Stress: Extends from an edge and lacks an impact point.
(For additional information or to read the full text of the standard, see www.rolags.com.)
Cracks that Require Windshield Replacement
The following types of cracks cannot be repaired:
- stress cracks
- cracks over 14 inches long
- edge cracks that extend to more than one edge
- cracks that are in the driver’s direct line of vision
- cracks that the technician determines will not fill properly due to contamination
If your windshield is cracked and you don’t know if it can be fixed, please call me at and I will answer your questions. In some cases, an inspection is necessary for me to determine if the damage is repairable or not.
